I had a feeling this show would be here when it didn't make the 1.5 list along with 60 Minutes & etc.

Some Guy Named John, I don't believe that any TV is too smart for audiences. It has to be entertaining and engaging. Some "smart," shows that have die hard fans weren't very engaging. PUSHING DAISIES comes to mind, that show was just flat boring to the majority of people who sampled it.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE was never boring. In fact due to it being only 30 minutes long, it was extremely engaging. A large number of the population did watch it. Critics loved it, and it was award winning. It changed how TV was written. The network still didn't understand how to market it. It was never given a cushy time slot, etc. Even when it came back in the 80s CBS treated it poorly.

If CBS had combined it with GUNSMOKE, we'd be talking about a show with much better ratings and likely more seasons (and writers) and higher budgets.

puredieselbc, while I admit many network executives today aren't the brightest bulbs out there... the Executives back then didn't even understand the medium at all. They make Dawn Ostroff look like a genius.

puredieselbc , you are kinda right. The networks and the sponsors want watered down simple stories that hook as many people as possible. If you try to create something that requires thought or references beyond the show then it is lost on people and on sponsors. That is how things are. For instance people watched the twilight zone for a scary story about monsters and aliens, and unintentionally they learned about race relations and politics without really absorbing them. Same thing applies to a show like All in the Family, which dealt with many issues that networks even today have problems airing on TV and because it was done from the point of view of this older guy who hated nearly everyone it was okay. Most people missed the points these shows tried to make.

"the stupidity of the people running TV at the time was amazing."

Seriously Nick C? I really don't think that element of tv has changed a single iota.

Oops! Sorry, Nick! I skimmed back through the list to look for The Honeymooners specifically and didn't catch that reference.

Great pick. I kept my mind open and didn't even try to pick a number one. This show could be on right now on nearly any network if it used good writers and producers. Its a shame how it was treated but thats is the case with too many TV shows.

Thank you. Thank you. The Twilight Zone has always been my favorite television show. I don't know of many other people who realize the scope of the stories that were told, let alone people in my age range that even know of it beyond the shows title (I was born in 1981).

Well, time to go take a walk down memory lane.
