While Nielsen has a lot of problems, I really don't think that getting rid of it would ever be a good idea. And the idea of the cabal and the unreliable ratings isn't exactly an idea Nielsen created.

The problem with the complaints people have about Nielsen is that recently they have mostly had to do with the lack of online viewing included, as you said, but there's no way to possibly count them with TV viewing. An advertiser isn't going to pay for X amount of eyeballs when Y amount of those are not going to see their advertisement, because they weren't watching on TV.

And the networks all know exactly how many views they get on their various legal streaming sites. They don't need Nielsen to tell them, though they do lose out on demo info.

So, basically, all the bitching and moaning seems completely unwarranted from all sides.

And, Jack, the problem with what you are saying is that even if every single TV was monitored, shows that are currently being canceled for low ratings would almost all continue to be canceled for low ratings. The inaccuracies people ascribe to Nielsen are grossly overstated.

People are pussies about privacy (alliteration not intended). I know I wouldn't care if Big Media knew everything I was watching if it helped me continue to watch those very things.
