MELROSE PLACE turns 5 scripts into 5 episodes

Along with THE VAMPIRE DIARIES getting a full season pickup…
The CW has also turned that 5 script order into a 5 episode order. MELROSE has picked up a bit in the ratings, and the show is starting to get decent, but its not enough to squeeze that extra 4 more out of it (just yet). It’s possible The CW will cap the Season (Series?) out at 18 episodes like last years now-canceled PRIVILEGED so they can air some of their “reality” shows they picked up for 4-6 episodes.

As a big fan of Reaper, I hope it fails.
Siri, MELROSE PLACE has already failed. This is just a waste of money. They are praying (stupidly) that Heather Locklear can save the show. It won’t happen.
I have to second Siri’s opinion. Reaper was at least a stable show and it performed admirably against Idol.
I think Dawn Ostroff is merely reaping what she sowed at this point. She didn’t order enough mid season replacements and now she forced to save face with this ratings disaster.
Nick, while I’m sure they already know the show is dead, and can’t honestly expect Locklear to save it, do they really have any choice but to give it a few more episodes? There’s only one mid season drama. They have Blonde Charity Mafia, which is 6 half hour episodes, and then the two half hour reality series they recently ordered 8 episodes each of, which I’m not sure will even be ready before summer. I don’t see how CW had a choice here.
Julia, they did. They considered picking up BODY POLITIC, but Dawn was convinced that MELROSE and TBL would be “hits.”
As much as people wanted The Body Politic to be picked up (even though 99% of those people never saw the pilot) I doubt it would have fared much better than TBL did. They were smart enough (in retrospect) not to pick up the GG spinoff considering how bad GG is doing right now in the ratings.
Right, they had a choice six months ago, but right now, after seeing how wrong they were, they don’t have a choice.
Was CW going to reshoot the pilot for Life UneXpected?
Brad, the GG spinoff would’ve fared much better than Melrose.
I still think that Body Politic would have done much better than TBL. I don’t think it would have done amazing numbers, but it’d probably be steady at around two million. It had a great, more recognizable cast (several from other CW shows) and a different premise. TBL didn’t have much promotion but it should have done a little better considering the compatibility of its lead-in. Body Politic would have gotten an decent amount of recognition for its cast and daring to be a little different for the network.
I also wouldn’t be so sure that almost everyone who wanted BP online never saw the pilot. The full presentation for it leaked months ago.
I honestly don’t think CW viewers would care about the plot surrounding Body Politic. Great cast? Yes. But premise wise…not really CWish.
But TBL was very CW-ish and look at how that did. The fact is that people complain about the network having the same types of shallow shows, but then they say that anything different isn’t a fit for the network.
The only thing they had this fall that was different from their norm is their only hit (of course vampires are the safest bet to make now).
I don’t think that BP would have done amazing numbers, but it would have probably outperformed both TBL and Melrose and gotten the network some public kudos for the cast and different premise, which is all they could ask for at this point.
